The 2009 MXoN ended in massive disappointment for the 2009 South African MX team.
After heat one, the boys were sitting in 7th thanks to solid 9th and 13th position finishes for Gareth and Tyla. By the end of heat 2, they had crept up to 5th overall, despite a pair of outrageously bad starts from Nev and Tyla. In the final heat it all came undone. On the third straight of the technical track, Neville was involved in a 3 way high speed collision through a rhythm section, which sent him and the other two down hard. A suspected broken ankle and torn knee ligaments saw Neville leave the circuit in an ambulance. A few laps later, Gareth had started working his way through the pack, before he too ended his race early, with a massive crash that left his radiator ripped off and bike bent.
The two DNFs meant that we dropped right down to 9th in the overall placings. All three riders were bitterly disappointed at the sad end to their hard fought campaign.
It came down to bad luck, as each rider definitely gave their all for the team and their country. Despite the final placing, they did us proud in the way they went about things all weekend long.
Thanks to every single supporter, fan, sponsor, family member and the riders' crews who got behind the guys so enthusiastically.
